Remarks Named so because when dried it retains enough oil in its body to be burned like a candle (Ref. 2850, 4925, 6850, 6885). Prior to the availability of wax candles and inexpensive oil lamps in the coastal region, light was obtained by forcing a rush or cloth wick down into an eulachon through the mouth. This wick was then lit like that of a candle (Ref. 1998). Also Ref. 6885, 33291.
