Remarks | As per this reference, in old Hawaii this name (i.e., Pa-'a-'a by syllables) was used for the young growth stage of 2 or 3 inches. As per reference 26145: "The punctuation mark (') in a Hawaiian word denotes the glottal stop, a common feature of Polynesian languages. It indicates a brief pause at this point in the pronunciation of a word. At one time in the past there was a consonant where the glottal stop now occurs." In old Hawaii the other names of growth stages used in conjunction with this name were "Akule" and "Halalu or Hahalalu". |
