Remarks 'cod', from Old English 'cod', i.e., pouch or with a baglike appearance (p. 122, Ref. 11979); 'black', from Old English 'blæc', of obscure origins but probably related to Latin 'flagrare' and Greek 'phlégein', i.e., burn, from Indo-European 'phleg-, bhleg-' (p. 65 in Ref. 11979). According to http://www.granddictionnaire.com/_fs_global_01.htm, this is a synonym to the official English name "sablefish" used in Canada. Also Ref. 51056.
