 Environment:  demersal
 Distribution:  Africa: Ogowe River and Congo River basin (Ref. 81650).
 Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 19-20; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8-11; Anal spines: 9-11; Anal soft rays: 8-11; Vertebrae: 30-30. Head and snout relatively acute, dorsal profile flat, with body deepening steadily from snout to maximum depth (Ref. 81650). Dorsal and anal fins are pointed in both sexes (Ref. 81650). Scales in lateral series 28-30, upper lateral line 13-19, lower lateral line 11-16, 2-4 scales above upper lateral line, 7-9 below it (Ref. 81650). There are 2-16 serrations above opercular notch, 0-10 serrations within notch, 2-16 serrations below notch, 2-22 subopercular serrations and 0-11 serrations on interopercle; preopercle rarely serrated (Ref. 81650). Body and head of adults dark brown, frequently lighter brown or tan ventrally; flanks sometimes with 8-10 dark bars that do not continue onto the unpaired fins and decrease in clarity with maturity; adult specimens of over 80mm standard length have diffuse black pigment in pelvic fins; the opercular membrane in the opercular notch is black (Ref. 81650). Juveniles with 8-9 dark bars, each a single scale row wide; they also have a slight concentration of pigment near the soft dorsal base, and their pelvic fins are clear (Ref. 81650).
