 Distribution:  South America: Amazon basin from Peru to the Guianas.
 Diagnosis:   
 Biology:  Occurs in slow flowing areas of the main stream, over muddy bottoms (Ref. 12225). Considered gregarious and peaceful. Its reproduction in captivity would have been carried out for the first time in 1988 (Ref. 27188).
