 Family:  Cichlidae (Cichlids), subfamily: Pseudocrenilabrinae
 Max. size:  24.5 cm TL (male/unsexed)
 Environment:  demersal
 Distribution:  Africa: Occurs in Lake Malawi and the upper Shire River.
 Diagnosis:  Description: mostly deep-bodied; outer teeth in oral jaws bicuspid; dorsal and anal fin of largest specimens somewhat elongated (Ref. 55954).
 Biology:  Common at 10 m depth and prefers the area where non-breeding individuals congregate into schools over the sandy part of the biotope. Feeds on phytoplankton or takes its food from the somewhat muddy layer on the substrate (Ref. 5595).
