decomposition
(english) The ecological process carried out primarily by microbes that leads to a transformation of dead organic matter into inorganic mater. The converse of biological production. For example, the transformation of dead plant material, such as leaf litter and dead wood, into carbon dioxide, nitrogen gas, and ammonium and nitrates. (See also: bacteria)
