Definition of Term

thermocline
(english) The distinct interface between surface waters and cooler, deeper waters; region between the warm upper layer (epilimnion) and the lower cold layer (hypolimnion) of the sea or lake, where temperature declines abruptly (1C° or more per meter)with increasing depth.

(french) Interface distincte entre les eaux de surface et les eaux profondes, plus fraîches ; région en dessous de la couche superficielle de la mer ou des lacs, à partir de laquelle la température décline abruptement avec la profondeur.
termoclina
(portuguese) A interface distinta entre as águas de superfície e as camadas mais frias e profundas. Região abaixo da superfície a partir da qual a temperatura desce abruptamente com a profundidade.
