  Etymology of Generic name : 
 
A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335).
Etymology of specific name : 
 
Notropis meaning ridged or keeled back, and bairdi, named for an early student of the fishes of the southwest, and one of the outstanding figures in American zoology, Spencer Fullerton Baird (Ref. 79012).
