  Etymology of Generic name : 
  
Name from the Greek 'protos' meaning first, and Latin 'anguilla' for eel; referring to the early divergence of the genus among anguilliforms.
Etymology of specific name : 
  
Named for its type locality; noun in appostion (Ref. 87802). The genus name was spelled Prot*o*anguilla in the first pre-electronic-published version then emended in Prot**anguilla in the version 2 and 3. Spelling to be confirmed when the original description will be paper-published.
