Diagnostic characters: principal caudal fin ray count in juveniles (7+8). Pigment: most lightly pigmented Hexagrammos species; postanal ventral midline absent until about 15 mm SL, then starts on caudal peduncle; by about 23 mm SL all along anal fin base. Sequence of fin development: caudal, pectorals, 2nd dorsal (rays) and anal, 1st dorsal (spines), pelvics.
