Occurs in schools over hard as well as sandy bottoms, especially in the upper 100 m. Omnivorous with a predominantly carnivorous diet (including crustaceans, cephalopods, small fish, amphioxus and worms). Protogynic hermaphrodite (Ref. 3688).
