Etymology: Paraliparis: Greek, para = the side of + Greek, liparis = fat (Ref. 45335); adustus: Name from Latin 'adustus' meaning 'brown of skin'’ referring to the uniform brown coloration of the body and median fins of the holotype.

Vertebrae: 68. The species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: D 64; A 56; pectoral-fin rays 24; vertebrae 68 (11+57); dorsalmost pectoral-fin ray insertion level with dorsal margin of eye; ventral pectoral-fin lobe with 3 short, thick, fleshy, lightly pigmented rays; mouth reaching posteriorly beyond anterior margin of eye; gill opening entirely above pectoral fin, surrounded with fleshy tissue; long, pointed gill rakers with 0-3 spinules at or near tip; anus positioned forward near the pectoral symphysis; wide caudal fin with 6 rays; pyloric caeca 5; uniformly brown on lateral body and median fins (Ref. 82595).
Collected at 640 m in water 3,658 m deep using a Marinovich midwater trawl. The male holotype was with mature testes, and possess a prominent genital papilla, length nearly one-half eye diameter and directed anteriorly (Ref. 82595).
