Vertebrae: 39 - 43. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: dorsal-fin branched rays, mode of 8½; anal-fin branched rays, modally 10-11½; small scales on flank, lateral line scales 44-54 pored to the hypural fold, total 45-56; usual pharyngeal-tooth formula 2.5-4.2; total vertebrae 40-42, the abdominal + caudal vertebral formulae usually 22+19, 22+20 and 21+20 (Ref. 84539).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Construction of the dam on the Zayandeh River (where the species is known) has altered the ecology of the river system. However, its effects on the distribution and numbers of the new species is unknown. It may be relatively secure in higher tributary streams but demands on water resources from this and other rivers on the central desert plateau of Iran have increased markedly as the human population of the country has doubled in 30 years. Freshwater resources are under threat, exacerbated by droughts, and all species found in these desert or semi-desert areas are under stress (Ref. 84539),
