Etymology: Gobiodon: Latin, gobius = gudgeon + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335);  winterbottomi: Named for Dr. Richard Winterbottom (ROM), in honor of his great contribution to our knowledge of the systematics of the Gobioidei.

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 9; Vertebrae: 26. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: jaw teeth subequal in shape and size; no postsymphysial canine teeth; no interopercle-isthmus groove; narrow gill opening; no elongated dorsal-fin spines; large second dorsal, anal and pelvic fins: second dorsal and anal fins reaching posteriorly to or beyond middle of caudal-fin base when appressed; pelvic fins reaching posteriorly to middle to posterior half of genital papilla; pectoral-fin rays 15 or 16; head, body and fins gray, no stripes or other markings when fresh or alive (Ref. 91086).
