Africa: streams in south eastern Tanzania near Korogwe. Also reported from Kenya (Ref. 30558). In the IUCN Red List this species is erroneously recorded as 'extinct', since it is probably confused with another cichlid species of Lake Victoria, Haplochromis squamulatus.
