Comments: Widely distributed around New Zealand, most common off the east coast of the North Island, in 300 to 800 m (Ref. 9258). Recorded as scarce in the Northeastern and Eastern Chatham Rise (Ref. 87166). First record in the Chatham Islands (Ref. 45493). Also Ref. 4329, 31632.

Descrição breve

Espinhos dorsais (total): 7 - 8; Raios dorsais moles (total): 9-11; Espinhos anais 2; Raios anais moles: 9. No opercular spines. 8 spines on first dorsal fin (Ref. 31632). Snout blunt, eye large. Mouth large, lower jaw equaling or slightly protruding beyond upper jaw. Pyloric caeca 21-34. Brown-violet or black, iridescent in life.

Adults benthic or benthopelagic on the continental slopes; juveniles pelagic (Ref. 7321). Found on soft bottoms (Ref. 27121). Non-territorial. Carnivorous, feed on small fishes and planktonic invertebrates.
