Ecology
Freshwater; benthopelagic; pH range: 6.0 - 7.0; dH range: 4 - 6; non-migratory. Tropical; 20°C - 24°C (Ref. 1672), preferred ?; 19°S - 20°S
Africa: lower Zambezi and lower Pungwe River systems in Mozambique; also likely to occur in floodplains of other rivers between Zambezi and Pungwe Rivers (Ref. 85866).

Occurs in temporary pools and swamps or water-filled depressions; water depth variable an descreases as dry season progresses; littoral vegetation consists of grasses; swamps may be used to cultivate rice (Ref. 85866). Bottom spawner, 4-6 months incubation. Is very difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139).
