Inhabits shallow permanent standing water of ditches, canals and ponds. Most commonly found in water that has dense growth of submerged aquatic macrophytes with finely divided leaves. Feeds on plankton. Caught only with fine-meshed nets or when larger nets pull out large amounts of plants, trapping the fishes in them. Not seen in the markets (Ref. 12693). Non-annual breeder. Is very difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139).
