Etymology: Notoscopelus: Greek, noton = back + Greek, skopelos = a lantern fish (Ref. 45335).
Issue
The position of the species as a synonym of Notoscopelus elongatus (Costa, 1844) is apprently a mistake. Fixation of the issue in progress.

Ecology
Marine; pelagic-oceanic; oceanodromous (Ref. 51243); depth range 0 - 1000 m (Ref. 35388), usually 800 - 900 m (Ref. 13799). Temperate, preferred ?; 68°N - 37°N, 66°W - 16°E
Atlantic Ocean: between the Arctic Circle and 37°N in the east and between 60°N and 40°N in the west.

Max length : 14.3 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 4775)
High-oceanic species. Found at 325 to deeper than 1,000 m during the day; nyctoepipelagic at surface and down to 125 m (Ref. 4775). Epipelagic to bathypelagic. Feeds on crustaceans (Ref. 58426).
