Etymology: Centropyge: Greek, kentron = sting + Greek, pyge = tail (Ref. 45335);  narcosis: From the Greek 'narke' meaning numbness or torpor, referring to the extreme effects of nitrogen narcosis (experienced by the author and Mr. Boyle while collecting the holotype..   More on author: Randall.

Observed within interstices of cracks and caves along vertical drop-offs at depths below 100 m. Natural diet is unknown but accepts a wide range of food (Ref. 26238). Forms pairs or small groups. Almost never exported through the aquarium trade (Ref. 48391).
