Etymology: Parananochromis: Greek, para = the side of + Latin, nannus = small + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); ornatus: From the Latin ornatus meaning handsome or splendid, in reference to the attractive coloration of the species (Ref. 50579).

Vertebrae: 25 - 27. Diagnosis: lachrymal plus three tubular infraorbitals; well-developed visor-like hanging pad on pharynx roof (Ref. 50579, 81260). Cheek (Ref. 81260) and chest (Ref. 50579, 81260) fully scaled. 5-6 scales between base of pectoral and pelvic fins (Ref. 81260). Caudal fin normally rounded, upper lobe sometimes with a slight prolongation in male specimens (Ref. 50579).
Monogamous, biparental, substrate spawner displaying some degree of sexual dichromatism (Ref. 81260).
