Etymology: Soleichthys: Latin, solea = sandal (shoe) + Greek, ichthys = fish (Ref. 45335); oculofasciatus: Name from the Latin words 'oculatus' for having eyes and 'fasciatus' meaning banded; referringto the pigment band encompassing the eyes of this species.

Vertebrae: 45 - 46. This species is distinguished from its congeners in having the following set of characters: vertebrae 45-46; dorsal-fin rays 79-81; anal-fin rays 68; lateral-line scales 85-86; ocular side with 11 complete crossbands that are wider than their respective interspaces, 4 conspicuous white spots with 2 arranged in vertical series; 3 crossbands on the head; 2 elongate ocular-side pectoral-fin rays with the first fin ray noticeably longer than the second; no scales on the ocular-side pectoral-fin base and proximal halves of elongated ocular-side pectoral-fin rays (Ref. 76812).
