Etymology: Crenicichla: Latin, crenulatus = cut, clipped + Greek, kichle = wrasse (Ref. 45335);  monicae: Named for Mônica Toledo-Piza Ragazzo for her initiative and effort in publishing the drawings of Wallace which were a great service to science, and also for decisiveness in identifying the new species.

South America: lower Rio Uaupés and lower Rio Içana, tributaries of the upper Rio Negro in Brazil. Unconfirmed information suggests that the species occurs also more upstream in the Uaupés at Mitú in Colombia.
