Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); xaenocephalus: From the words xaeno, to scratch; and cephalus, meaning head (referring to head tuberculation of nuptial males) (Ref. 10294).
