Etymology: Atherinomorus: Greek, atherina, the Greek name for the eperlane + Greek, moros = silly, stupid (Ref. 45335);  aetholepis: Named for its scales with long spatular outgrowth posteriorly along the dorsal midline anterior to the second dorsal fin.
