Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); xaenocephalus: From the words xaeno, to scratch; and cephalus, meaning head (referring to head tuberculation of nuptial males) (Ref. 10294).

North America: Coosa and Tallapoosa River systems (Mobile Bay drainage) in southeastern Tennessee, northwestern Georgia and eastern Alabama in the USA.

Occurs in clear, gravel-bottomed pools and runs, but common in spring-fed streams (Ref. 5723). Also inhabits small creeks and rivers (Ref. 10294).
