Etymology: Atherinomorus: Greek, atherina, the Greek name for the eperlane + Greek, moros = silly, stupid (Ref. 45335); aetholepis: Named for its scales with long spatular outgrowth posteriorly along the dorsal midline anterior to the second dorsal fin.

خارهاي باله پشتي (کل): 4 - 7; شعاع نرم باله پشتي (کل): 9-11; خارهاي باله مخرجي 1; شعاع نرم باله مخرجي: 12 - 14; مهره ها: 38 - 42. Long spatular outgrowth on the posterior margins of the majority of the predorsal and interdorsal scales. Eyes large.
Adults occur usually along the open coast; rarely seen in lagoons or inner parts of bays and inlets (Ref. 44256).
