Etymology: Gymnotus: Greek, gymnos = naked (Ref. 45335); henni: Named for Arthur W. Henn, a pioneer in Neotropical ichthyology, who collected the type specimens of this species (Ref. 49716).

Taggstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt): 0; Mjukstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt): 0; Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 223 - 275. Head with brown ground color and irregularly shaped pale-yellow blotches located on chin, gular area, behind and under eyes, over opercle, and between eyes; pale yellow bands as broad or broader than dark brown bands on anterior half of body; obliquely oriented hyaline and dark stripes at caudal end of anal fin (Ref. 49716).
